Pictured below is the beautiful new Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge or Cooper River Bridge as it is more commonly known which was finished and officially opened July 16, 2005. Charleston is an historic treasure of a City dating back to the mid 1600’s and home of Fort Sumpter and The Citadel. Throughout history it has remained a pivotal strategic stronghold from the Civil War to the present and has survived massive earthquakes, fires, and storms but continues to thrive and prosper.

The photos on this page are used by kind and generous permission of the photographer C. Frank Starmer who photographically documented the construction of the new Cooper River Bridge. Archival quality prints can be purchased at Frank Starmer’s Photo Gallery and further history of the city can be found at the Charleston Community History site.
Try towing an Airstream across this bridge sometime in a high wind. Whew!

They don’t actually do it this way anymore. As you can see things could get a little precarious. Nowadays they drive it on using a special vehicle with a hitch mount. Notice how this Airstream is being lowered through a large hole in the deck into the lower part of the ship. This apparatus was specially designed by Wally Byam himself.
